The National Dental Survey 2007 found
that more than one in four people have
never even heard of mouth cancer
while around half are not aware of the
key risk factors.
Early detection saves lives, so it is vital that
people know what to look out for.
That is why the blue ribbon badge is so
important. It is surprising how many people who
see someone wearing a badge then go on to
ask them what it represents.
With this in mind it is vital that every dental
practice, pharmacy, doctor’s surgery and hospital
provides Blue Ribbon Badges for each member of
their team – ideally to be worn all year round.
This has two clear benefi ts.
With every member of your team wearing a blue
ribbon badge you are publicly showing support for
a condition that – thanks to its effect on the face
and basic human functions like eating and talking
- is known to be among the most distressing and
psychologically damaging for sufferers.
Secondly, by encouraging people to ask you
and your staff about the badge, you are creating
an ideal opportunity to educate them on the
dangers of mouth cancer. Awareness saves
lives, so this is incredibly important.
Of course, if the patient can be persuaded to
purchase a badge themselves, they will then go
on to spread the message among their own social
circle – creating an ever wider circle of awareness.
